SSDP Ireland Host’s “Support. Don’t Punish” In Dublin & Limerick

In June, Students for Sensible Drug Policy Ireland held events across Ireland under the banner ‘Support. Don’t Punish’ – this global day of action once again saw events all across the globe with the message of compassion, understanding and common-sense over criminalisation of those that use drugs.

On behalf of UK LEAP, Jim Duffy attended the events in Limerick and Dublin. This was the first occasion that SSDP had engaged with the public in Limerick.

The Dublin event was held on O’Connell Street in the city centre outside of the iconic Post Office building. Speakers included the Minister of State at the Department for Justice, Aodhán Ó’Ríordáin, Senator James Heffernan, followed by Anne-Marie Cockburn who has just been an integral part of the new ‘Anyone’s Child’ campaign. Dr John Collins, the International Drug Policy Project Coordinator for LSE Ideas (London School of Economics) also held the audience’s attention on this monumental day of action – ‘Support. Don’t Punish’ once again brought drug policy reform to new audiences.

Retired Police Inspector and former Chair of Strathclyde Police Federation, Jim Duffy, attracted a large crowd of onlookers as he spoke of Law Enforcement Action Partnership’s global message of reform from our unique perspective as police and enforcement officers. Many signatures of support were added to SSDP Ireland’s petition, and the fact that the Government Minister of State spoke in support of decriminalisation and the subsequent reform of Irish drug policy, well, it certainly bodes well for the future.

All speeches can be viewed on the SSDP Ireland’s YouTube Channel here.
